ascenseur pour l’echafaud (even more gift ideas)

everything about this movie is amazing. the absolutely gorgeous jeanne moreau wandering around nighttime paris, the improvisational score created by miles davis, the clever manipulation of the noir plot structure, and the fact that it was directed by a twenty-four-year-old  louis malle are some of the reasons why this film is a must have. the special edition double disc set by the criterion collection has interviews, documentaries, and malle’s student film crazeologie.

pedaço de papel

the short film pedaço de papel (produced by my dear friend carla onodera) won two awards in the los angeles reel film festival: best narrative short and best director. despite the small budget and countless setbacks that came up during the film’s production and execution, they were able to put out an amazing work. best of luck to lumiart!

online film festival

sao-paulo-2009the 33a mostra internacional de cinema de são paulo and the site the auteurs just launched an online version of the festival in which “an international selection of films from the competition will be streamed to the first 300 viewers once they’ve unreeled in theaters in sp.” is that sweet or what? the festival ends nov 5, so you have plenty of time to watch some of the most recent productions of foreign and independent films that you might not be able to watch otherwise.

o dobro de cinco

o dobro do cinco is an adaptation of the graphic novel written and illustrated by lourenço mutarelli. i’ve been a fan of mutarelli’s works for quite some time but i’m particularly fond of these books for the combination of a noirsh style and a detectivesque narrative with the bizarre characters typical of his works. hopefully the multi-media treatment of the story won’t mess thing up too much. i can’t wait to see this film.
